Travelling to Morocco means travelling to another continent, another culture, another way of life. Travelling to Morocco also means travelling back in time to the 14th century. Morocco is a country with a very rich history, culture and agriculture. You can freely speak about these subject but never speak about politics and religion. If they start to tell you about their king, political system, religion a.s.o. immediately say that you don't want to discuss about it. The Moroccans do respect you, so respect them. In Morocco a local guide will come on the bus. The country has 28 million inhabitants. 99% is muslim, 1% are christians and there are about 12.000 jews. All religions are allowed in Morocco. More than 53 % of the population is younger than 24 years old. The Berbers are the original population of Morocco and count 75 % of the population. The other part are Arabs who mostly live in the cities. The Berbers are divided in 3 populations in the north, middle and south parts of the country. All 3 populations speak their own language. The 2 most important economical activities are agriculture and handy craft Agriculture: some big cooperations Handy craft: Handy craft is the second most important economical activity and it has its own "Ministry of Handy craft". The country has some 200.000 handy craft schools that bring their work to the bazar of the cooperation. The handy craft has no fixed price, prices have to be discussed and agreed. Minerals: Phosphates, cobalt, iron, lead, manganese, silver, zinc, are the most important export products. Most money from abroad comes in from Moroccan emigrants all over the world and tourism. History: The first city in Morocco was Fez (the cultural capital), founded in the 9th century, followed by Marakech, Rabat (the political capital with 1,8 million inhabitants), Casablanca (the biggest city with 5,5 million inhabitants and a lot of industry that makes it the economical capital) and Tanger (the 5th city of Morocco). The first invaders were the Phoenicians that founded commercial harbours on the coast side. The Carthagenese captured and extended these colonies. In the 2nd century BC Carthago was captured by the Romans, in 42 the part of Morocco on the Atlantic coast was added to the Roman Empire. In 429 the Vandals captured the country when the Roman Empire collapsed. In 533 general Belisario from the Byzantine Empire captured most of Morocco. In 682 the Arabs invaded the region. In 1415 Portugal captured the harbour of Ceuta and since then Spain and Portugal started to control more and more parts of the coastal regions. At the end of the 18th century, most of the territories were recaptured by the Moroccan kings. In the 18th and beginning of the 19th century Moroccan pirates were widely active in the Mediterranean Sea. In 1904 Spain and France agreed to divide Morocco between them and make so 2 protectorates, Spain in the north and France had the biggest part in the south, the Moroccan kings remained on their throne. Between 1920 and 1926 the country was fighting for its freedom but the French and the Spanish turned down the revolt. In March 1956 the French accepted the independence of Morocco. In April of the same year the Spanish accepted the independence and that the 2 protectorates would be united. In 1975 Morocco captured the Western Sahara, a former colony of Spain. In the school they learn 3 languages: Arabic, French and if they want their own local Berber language. Tanger: The city lays on the coast and has it's own harbour in the Bay of Tanger in the Province of Tanger. It has nice views on the Street of Gibraltar and when there is clear weather you can see the southern coast of Spain. It has a mild winter with some rain and a warm summer. The city has history dating back to 500 BC. The ancient Greek hero Hercules should have founded the city. The Hercules Caves lay 13 km to the south and it is said that he slept there waiting to do one of his 12 works which was to pick the Hesperides garden golden apples. It was occupied by the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. The Roman name of Tanger was "Tingis", in French "Tangier" and in Arabic it is "Tanya". In the Roman Era the country was divided in 2 colonies: Mauretania Tingitania in the north and Mauretania Casariense in the south. The native population is called "Berbers", derived from the word barbarians as the Romans called them. It was then for several centuries an Arabic country until in 1471 the Portuguese conquered the country but gave it to England. In 1684 the English gave up their colony and it returned in Arabic hands with the Sultan of Morocco as head. Tanger became a base for pirates. In 1912 the city and the surrounding 363 km2 were declared "international territory" under control of Great Briton, Spain, France, United States and a representative of the Moroccan king. During the Second World War Spain had the absolute control of the city. After the war the city again came under international control. In 1956 it was annexed by Morocco. France, United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, United States still each have their own neighbourhood. If a family from one neighbourhood moves to another, the children also move to another international school. So a lot of people in Tanger speak more than 2 languages. Tanger has about 550.000 inhabitants. The Kasbah (or military fortress) is the highest part of the Medina (or city with walls), the present Kasbah dates back to the 15th century. As soon as the boat docks, a policeman comes aboard, give him 5 € to make him fix the passports as quickly as possible. Do the same when you come back to enter the boat for returning. Tanger Buying in the medina: 30 % of commission is paid to tour guides, so help your tourists to buy by negotiating, translating, … They accept all kinds of payments, also spreading payments over some months with credit cards. To Americans you can say you get commission as they accept it as being normal.
